December 6 Drone-a-thon
On December 6, 2025, CP Mentorships’ Emergency Response Committee hosted an exciting and engaging drone-a-thon at Cupertino Library. We had 7 experienced TAs running the event and about 20 kids participating. The day was full of hands-on learning and high-energy fun.
Presentation
The committee kicked things off with a presentation to teach the kids about CP Mentorship and the drone functionality. We used HISINGY FPV drones because they are small, durable, and beginner friendly. The participants were split into 6 groups of about 3-4 people, each assigned to one TA. The TAs taught the kids how to use the drones in more depth, and then gave them the opportunity to fly the drones themselves.
TA teaching kids
Kids flying
Each group shared one drone, with the participants taking turns flying. Then the kids had about an hour to play with the drones and experiment using the controls.
Practice time
A few crash landings later, we hosted some competitions. The TAs set up an obstacle course for an extra challenge. Each group chose a representative to participate in one of four rounds, giving each kid a chance to show off their new flight skills. The event wrapped up with an exciting race between the TAs themselves.
Competition
From learning about drones to navigating real life obstacles, the drone-a-thon was a great success and delivered a memorable blend of education and fun for everyone involved.
