Coyote Point Mural Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
On Saturday morning, September 6, community members gathered at Coyote Point for a very special occasion: the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new mural created by youth artists.
The event began with coffee, pastries, and plenty of conversations as people arrived and admired the energy of the morning. Soon after, the program began. Remarks were given by David Canepa, President of the Board of Supervisors, followed by Nicholas Calderon, San Mateo County Parks Director. Then Michele Beasley, Executive Director of the San Mateo County Parks Foundation, introduced Catherine Liu, Executive Director of CompassPoint Mentorship.
During her comments, Catherine highlighted the incredible dedication of the young artists, giving a special mention to Simon and Li. She then invited all the youth muralists to the front for a well-deserved round of applause and photos. The pride in the room was unmistakable.
After the introductions, it was time for the ribbon cutting. Large ceremonial scissors were passed to David Canepa, Nicholas Calderon, Catherine Liu, and SMCPF Board Chair Mary DeLong. Together, they cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of the mural, with cameras flashing to capture the moment.
The mural itself is the result of a huge community effort. Forty-five youth participated in the painting, guided by twelve youth leaders who worked on design, surveys, and installation. Over the course of three weeks of summer camp, these students transformed their ideas into a vibrant work of public art.
As the ceremony concluded, guests walked closer to admire the details of the mural and speak with the artists themselves. Parents, community leaders, and park visitors took time to ask questions, take pictures, and celebrate the dedication and creativity of the youth.
This mural is more than just an art project — it represents mentorship, teamwork, and the power of youth voices in shaping our shared spaces.
