Russell Wang – May 27, 2025
🕒 Read time: 5–6 minutes
Today, on June 1, most members of the CP Mentorship Youth Committee showed up. They went to Catherine’s house for the last meeting of the school year. This meeting was mainly a summary of what each committee did, reflection time, and a discussion about the Youth Committees next school year.
The meeting started with different committee chairs sharing what they have done recently.
Ethan presenting about the recent surveys.
The first presenter was Ethan, a co-chair of AI for Good. He shared about his part in the transportation project, which was in partnership with the Sunnyvale government. He talked about his recent two surveys at Fremont High School, which was done with Mia and Selena. The main article for the most recent survey is here. Go check it out! Ethan has talked about his next steps as well. He has decided on either using SUMO or AnyLogic, both being simulation software for simulating the traffic in hopes of finding more efficient bus routes for schools.
He also talked about what he has done with drones. Ethan, and a few other students, have gotten the FAA Part 107, which allows its holder to fly drones commercially. He expresses that his efforts can be used for the Aviation Class in summer camps, as well as in the Emergency Response Committee next year.
Next, Ranya, a committee chair of the Wellness Committee, spoke. She talked about her involvement in the Meeting Minutes Project, a project with the government. She is using Gemini to summarize Sunnyvale’s monthly meetings, which can sometimes last for 5 hours. This is all for a more accessible way for everyday people to know about what the government is doing.
Ranya talking about the April 15 Datathon.
Ranya also mentioned their recent Datathon on April 15, exploring data on ADHD. There were more than 30 students attending, along with 3 judges, 4 mentors, and 4 keynote speakers. The event was even featured in the World Journal.
She also went over three birdwatching events held in collaboration with YSI (Youth Science Institute). When asked what she would do next year, she mentioned starting a garden project in Alviso. She mentioned the high potential for this project as well.
After Ranya, Annie, a committee chair of the Public Art Committee, spoke about recent projects. These include three murals—one in Coyote Point Park, one in Ed Leven, and another outside the Milpitas Library. Two of these mural paintings will happen during summer camp. Remember to sign up for Coyote Point Park here and ED Leven here. The mural outside of the Milpitas Library is on a fence. Sign up for the event here!
She also talked about the upcoming AI Art Hackathon on June 28 at Google (20 spots left!). Annie mentioned their partnership with SVCE (Silicon Valley Clean Energy) and efforts to promote clean energy awareness through art initiatives in Milpitas, Morgan Hill, and Gilroy. She has also organized workshops, competitions, summer camp classes, and an upcoming concert in Coyote Grange.
Finally, Catherine discussed next year’s committee updates, including a new to-do list system and a few new committees. The list of new committees and their mission statements are here! She mentioned the Robotics Leadership Workshop at the Toyota Institute of Technology.
Sophia going over what her committee has done.
Sophia, chair of the History & Culture Committee, shared that they’re publishing a book in a week, along with other writing projects. Russell also briefly mentioned the recent Volunteer Training for the Summer Camp, where the team connected and prepared for the summer camp.
