Grants, Rules and a Guest Speaker: Youth Committee Meeting #2

The CompassPoint Youth Committee met for the second time this season on Sunday morning — nine committees, one room, two hours, and a markedly more businesslike feel than the opening night.

Meeting #1 was about welcome and ambition. Meeting #2 was about delivery.

Guest speaker: Norris Liu

The morning opened with guest speaker Norris Liu.

Ground rules

Russell Wang took the committee through the rules for the year — how committees operate, what is expected of members, and how work gets reported. Unglamorous, and the reason the rest of it functions.

Two grants on the table

Two funding threads came up, both tied to projects already underway:

A San José grant connected to Thomas Foon Chew Day — the Alviso cannery pioneer whose story CPM students have been researching and commemorating.

A VTA grant connected to Overfelt Gardens — the San José park CPM has adopted, where the first volunteer clean-up takes place on October 25 with co-host GR EDU Learning Center.

Grant applications are where a student project stops being a school exercise and starts being an organisation asking a public body for money to do something real.

Committee updates

The bulk of the morning went to each committee reporting what it has been working on and what comes next — the recurring structure of these meetings, and the reason they are monthly rather than annual.

Meeting #3 is Sunday, November 1, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
